Hospitality shift calculator: split and overnight shifts

Add work blocks, split shifts and overnight hours. See working time in hours:minutes and decimal hours.

End before start means the next calendar day. For another block after midnight, choose start day 2. Up to 8 blocks within 24 hours.

Formula and break check

Working time is the sum of work-block durations. Decimal hours = working minutes ÷ 60. Gaps are shown separately. No flat break is deducted: enter work before and after a break as separate blocks.

Section 4 of the German ArbZG requires 30 minutes of rest breaks for more than 6 up to 9 working hours, or 45 minutes for more than 9. Only pre-planned, freely available gaps of at least 15 minutes count here. More than 6 working hours without a qualifying break is flagged separately.

Two examples

Split shift 10:00–14:00 and 18:00–21:00 on the same day: 7:00 work = 7.00 decimal hours, 4:00 gap, 11:00 span. If the gap qualifies as a planned rest break, it covers the general 30-minute requirement.

Overnight: 22:00–02:00 (start day 1), then 02:30–06:00 (start day 2): 7:30 work = 7.50 decimal hours, 0:30 gap, 8:00 span. Confirm the break conditions before counting that gap as rest.

Questions and answers

How do I enter a break?

Leave a gap between two work blocks. One block from 08:00 to 16:00 counts as 8 hours. On-call time is not automatically a rest break.

Is this a legal rota assessment?

No. This covers general daily work and break limits for adult employees under German law. More than 8 hours needs a separate averaging check under section 3 ArbZG; more than 10 is flagged. Collective agreements, exceptions, young workers, other employers and rest between shifts are outside this tool.

What about daylight-saving changes?

Times are nominal local clock times without dates or a time zone. Check daylight-saving changes and actual recorded hours separately. Estimate without guarantee; not legal advice.
